at the bottom of this page. You’ll be asked to provide your name, email and house number.  And to choose what role you’d like to play (see below options).  We will deliver a lawn sign to your home, or you can pick it up, your choice.

Role Options:

  • Be a Demonstration House – simply display a lawn sign (delivered to your door) in your yard that announces you are taking part in the Como Curb Cleanup.  Then sweep the leaf debris that accumulates in the street gutter in front of your home at least once (more than once would be even better) during October/November.  Keep track of how often you clean your curb. At the end of the season we’ll contact you to ask how often you were able to get out there to clean that curb.  From this we can estimate your phosphorus prevention contribution and will add it to our community-wide totals!
  • Be a Block Organizer – In addition to being a demonstration house, also talk to a few of your neighbors and ask if they’d like to be a demonstration house.  If you find a few who are interested in the effort, simply let us know how many lawn signs you need to hand out and we’ll get them to you.
  • Be a Group Organizer – In addition to being a demonstration house, also pull together your family, a group of neighbors, a youth group, whatever, and clean up “curb” leaves from an entire block!  Together!  And take photos!  And post those photos here!  Or email them to janna@ComoACN.org

THEN!  What do you do with all those leaves?! Again, you have some choices:

  • Compost them in your yard.  No compost holder?  Not a problem.  Our partners at District 10 Community Council have free chicken wire to give away to Demonstration Houses for making a quick and easy leaf container/cylinder. Leaves break down fast so they’ll shrink to half their size within a few days.  Go to D10’s office at the Streetcar Station on Sunday, Nov. 2nd, from 12 to 2pm to pickup free wire.
  • Take them to Ramsey County Yard Waste.  You can find their hours HERE.  Don’t wanna wait in line?  Not a problem.  Our partners at Ramsey County will hold a special Como Curb Cleanup day at their Midway site on a day when they’re normally closed.  We will reveal the secret dates to demo houses, just ask us!
  • Ask for help hauling your leaf bags to the yard waste site.  Our partners at City of St. Paul Parks Dept. have offered to help out any Demonstration Houses with curbside bag pickup – your “curb” leaves AND your yard leaves.  To get on their list – send an email to janna@ComoACN.org

When to Stop? Once we get our first significant snow, we’ll send around a message saying we can all STOP.  Then we’ll tally up how many households took part, how many times they each got out to clean their curb frontage and we’ll add it ALL up.  We’ll announce how much leaf debris we cleaned up, how much phosphorus we prevented and how much future algae that phosphorus would have fueled!

And lastly… We’ll PARTY!!  All Demonstration Houses will be invited to a fun potluck party in January.  We’ll celebrate our community achievement and we’ll meet each other – our fellow ‘active citizen’ Como Lake loving neighbors!  Some of our “knowledgeable” neighbors will be available to chat about the latest reports on Como Lake’s condition and about current and proposed strategies to restore our lake’s health. We’ll also have research to share about the new, added challenge for Como Lake – salt! And we’ll be collecting ideas to add to our “wish list” for future initiatives the Como Active Citizen Network will take on.  We’ll have good food, good conversation, and good fun!  Hope to see you there.
